A 15-year-old girl who narrowly escaped drowning at Lake Waxahachie, Texas, has spoken out about the tragic incident, expressing deep gratitude to her friend who died while trying to save her. Genesis Delgado and 21-year-old Lincer Lopez were part of a church group that visited the lake on a Saturday for a baptism ceremony. Lopez, who had just been baptized an hour earlier, tragically drowned while attempting to rescue Genesis after she found herself in deep water and began to struggle.
Genesis, who was later saved by a boater and given CPR, was transported to a medical facility for treatment. Lincer, however, was pulled from the water and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In a heartfelt message to her late friend, Genesis said, “I thank you, Lincer, for everything you tried to do, and I hope I can see you again soon. I believe I will.” She also extended her condolences to Lincer’s family, acknowledging the loss they endured and expressing how much she cared for him.
Lincer Lopez, who worked as a construction worker to support his family in Mexico, was remembered by his uncle, Jacobo Lopez, as a hero. “He didn’t think twice about rescuing someone else,” Jacobo said, highlighting Lincer’s selflessness and bravery. Lincer was the eldest of seven siblings and had been looking forward to his baptism, so much so that he couldn’t rest the night before the tragedy.
A fundraiser has been created to help repatriate Lincer’s body to Mexico, where his family mourns the loss of their beloved son and brother.
