The tragic incident in Nassau County, where five members of a family were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide, has sent shockwaves through the Syosset community. The deaths occurred at the home of a recently deceased 95-year-old matriarch, Theresa Martha DeLucia, just days after her passing. Police were called to the residence on Wyoming Court around noon on Sunday, where they discovered a man dead outside the home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Four additional victims were found inside the house, all of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, the deaths are believed to be the result of a murder-suicide, though details surrounding the events leading up to the tragedy remain under investigation. The family had reportedly gathered at the home to mourn the loss of their matriarch and prepare to sell the house.
Neighbors expressed their shock and sadness over the incident, with one describing it as a “tragedy” for the family. The peaceful Syosset neighborhood, which had never experienced anything like this before, is now grappling with the devastating loss.
The DeLucia family, some of whom had traveled from out of state, were in the process of making arrangements to sell the home when the tragedy unfolded. A local real estate agent, Mary Macaluso, had an appointment scheduled with the family to discuss preparing the house for listing.
The community is left in mourning as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event. The loss of five lives in such a violent manner has left residents and loved ones searching for answers and trying to come to terms with the devastating reality.
