If you regularly purchase Great Value Apple Juice from Walmart, it’s time to double-check your pantry. A voluntary recall has been issued for 9,535 cases of the eight-ounce Great Value Apple Juice, sold in a six-pack with PET plastic bottles (UPC 0-78742-29655-5). The recall was prompted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after the juice was found to contain inorganic arsenic levels exceeding the industry’s acceptable limits.
The FDA initially issued recall number F-1746-2024 on August 15, warning consumers of the potential risks. On August 23, the recall was escalated to a Class II status. This classification indicates that the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, although the likelihood of severe consequences is considered low.
Inorganic arsenic is recognized as a significant health hazard. According to the FDA, long-term exposure in adults has been linked to an increased risk of skin disorders, certain cancers (including skin, bladder, and lung cancers), and cardiovascular disease. Short-term exposure can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, bruising, and a tingling or burning sensation in the extremities.
It’s important to distinguish between inorganic and organic arsenic. The FDA notes that inorganic arsenic, often found in contaminated water, is far more dangerous than organic arsenic, which is commonly found in seafood and poses much less risk. The World Health Organization (WHO) also emphasizes the toxicity of inorganic arsenic compounds, calling them a global concern in drinking water contamination.
Consumers who have purchased the affected Great Value Apple Juice are advised to stop consuming the product immediately and return it to the place of purchase for a refund. This recall serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of food safety and the potential risks associated with contaminated products. Stay informed and vigilant to ensure the health and safety of your family.
